Mike Van Ryn out for 1 Month

Guess its a good thing we have all these defenceman stocked up, aint it?

Why do I say this? Because Mike Van Ryn is out for a month.

As we all mostly know (if you don’t, see the video below), Tom Kostopoulos was doing his job being an energetic human smasher, and managed to hit Van Ryn from behind, get a boarding penalty, and get kicked out of the game. Van Ryn would end up having trouble getting up, and being sent to hospital.

Turns out that the hit caused him to break his hand.

And his nose.

Oh, and throw in a concussion.

Thankfully for the Leafs, we still have Kubina, Kaberle, Schenn, Finger, Colaiacovo, Stralman, Frogren, and White. In fact, I think we can afford to lose two more defencemen without major hassle. Hopefully it doesn’t happen, but I’m just saying…it won’t really hurt unless those two are one of the “big two” and Schenn.

By the way, I’m kind of shocked Grabovski wasn’t the victim tonight - how many times was he hit? Apparently he wasn’t happy either. I haven’t heard his interview yet, but I did hear that he basically called everyone but Koivu on the habs unprofessional. Bad blood? You bet.

As promised, here is the video (thanks to Whitby4Bob, as for some reason I can’t get WMM to take my recordings on this new tuner. Say, does anyone know of a good basic free video editing program to use just for trimming?).

Why in the world would Van Ryn turn? You know a guy is running behind you and you turn and stop 2 feet from the board?

Those hits are awful and even more frequent with the touch icing rules.

This is the second time Van Ryn gets plowed this year… First Milan Lucic used him to shatter the tempered glass, and now this. Both times, van ryn didnt position himself properly for the hit… Whose fault is that?

That’s terrible, but why would you bend over when you know you’re about to get plowed? Ouch.

First off, yes Van Ryn turned. Should he have turned, probably not. But second, when a player turns or puts himself in a vulnerable position the player fore checking must not take advantage of this. That hit was dirty with intent to injure. Kostopoulos had enough time to lay off of avoid the hit interiorly. He should be suspended for numbers games without a doubt. My vote, bring in no touch icing because players have been getting seriously hurt for years from this. Wake up NHL

To everyone saying “he wasn’t in good position” blah blah… regardless, it’s an ILLEGAL hit! And is bad for Hockey & the NHL.

You see clearly Van Ryn beeing aware that Kostopoulos is going to check him. He clearly do nothing to try to avoid and or defend himself from the check, what is the most intelligent thing he do? stop 3 feet from the corner and duck…?

come on the guy saw kost and reacted like a peewee… Kost was going has fast has a bullet and he might not had the time to react fast enought If Van Ryn would have been up properly the check would have been on is back not is head.

Can I remind you Leafs suck up that other team had their player done dirty checks earlier this season and NHL did nothing about it…! It’s only because they pitty your team that have to give everything each night to grab a point of a team.

‘I’m kind of shocked Grabovski wasn’t the victim tonight’ Grabovski is a crying baby just wait until Mr Graber dosn’t have what he wants… Why Habs traded him to Leaf? go read the stories… Anyway Tangay for Graber fair trade.

lol “looks like hockey to me”

You need to watch more hockey then, and look at CAREER ENDING hits exactly like this one that have amounted over the years…
Kostopoulos is a dirty player for boarding Van Ryn like that, and he should get a Bertuzzi-like suspension for the YEAR.
Go for the puck first if you want to forecheck, otherwise lay off your man when you’re that deep in the zone. Its just poor play and a horrifying lack of sportsmanship.

To everyone saying the NHL should bring in the no-touch icing rule, this wasn’t even an icing play, the puck was dumped from the blue line. Sucks for Van Ryn, but he just had to keep his head up and not face the boards at the last second.

    His fault.

Yeah, we all know what sort of a threat Van Ryn is around the boards, better hit him every chance we get. Especially when his back is turned and head down. I suppose Kostopoulos can have those liberties in the absence of enforcers. Should have watched Bergeron’s video…silly…silly!
